I love how Keala describes this dichotomy of values and how we use them to measure our self-worth. He calls this “using the wrong ruler.” How simple?
I get the image of a physical ruler in my mind. Imagine measuring a yard using a meter stick. The difference in a yard versus a meter is .9144 meters. Now let us look at this in standard measurements.
- One meter = 3.2808 feet.
- One yard = 3 feet.
- One yard = .9144 meters.
The question is whether we are using the right ruler to measure ourselves.
It never ceases to amaze me: we all love ourselves more than other people, but care more about their opinions than our own.
Marcus Aurelius
Let us look at the difference in inches.
- One meter is .2808 feet longer than a yard which is 3.3696 inches.
Now imagine going to a doctor for brain surgery, but you know this doctor cannot get closer than 3.3 inches to the spot you need to be fixed. How pointless is that surgery?
Yet, that is exactly what we do when we measure ourselves against someone else’s values. We use a yardstick instead of a meter stick.
My friend, it is time to start measuring ourselves with the right stick.
Blessings to you, my friend,
